Wanda J. Barker

Wanda J. Owenby Barker age 88, a native and longtime resident of the Blue Ridge and Copperhill community, passed away on January 17, 2020 at the Walking Horse Community in Clarksville, TN. Wanda was born September 7, 1931 in McCaysville, GA, the daughter of the late Everett C. Owenby and Ruby Queen Owenby. She attended Martha Berry College in Rome, GA, and Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, and received her BS degree and MA degree at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. She was an elementary school teacher for many years at Roosevelt Elementary School in Anderson Indiana and completing her teaching career at Epworth Elementary School in Epworth, GA. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, Wayne Winkler of Johnson City, TN; and Wade Winkler (Tracy) of Clarksville, TN; a sister Mildred Simandle of Versailles, KY; and a brother William Owenby of Summerville, SC. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Erin Taylor (Vince) of Clarksville, TN; Eric Winkler of Carmel, IN; Claire Winkler of Johnson City, TN; and Josef Winkler of Johnson City, TN; two great grandchildren Lydia and Logan Taylor of Clarksville, TN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother Eschol Owenby, and sisters Margaret Wakefield and Sherill Kisselburg. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Bryan Contardi with burial in Damascus Cemetery in Blue Ridge, GA.
