Joann Alice Boyd was born on November 27, 1945 to the parents of MaryLee Kye and Sylvester Hannah in Chicago, Illinois. She wed Mr. Sylvester Boyd Jr. on May 13, 1963 and to this union they were blessed with four children. Joann was a graduate of Allegan High School, in Allegan, Michigan.
Joann was passionate about healthcare and taking care of people. At a very young age Joann took on much of the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. Her sister Christine recalls Joann as being a “very serious but loving sister who would do anything for anyone.” Joann was the second eldest of 8 children; she was preceded in death by her mother MaryLee Kye and father Sylvester Hannah as well as her brothers Roosevelt, Stanley, Frank Jr., Joshua, her sister Barbara Jean and grandson Kasey Gill. Joann was known for her ‘No nonsense, straight forward, bold but loving and caring heart.’ She was also known for giving her very last to those in need; she was a true giver and leader.
Joann’s passion for healthcare resulted in her working more than 40 years in the healthcare field; with the vast majority of this time spent providing services to individuals with special needs. After relocating to Clarksville, Tennessee, Joann continued caring for those with special needs at PDI until she was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2020.
Joann has left to celebrate her memory her children Leonard H. Boyd, Elizabeth J. Holton (Lawrence deceased), Anthony E. Boyd, Melissa M. Lowe (Robert) as well as her niece LaChaunda Tatum who she raised as her own. She also leaves to celebrate her memory; her sister Christina (Earl), brother Eugene; grandchildren Kalvin Gill (Heather), Kory Gill (Chrisma), Kurtis Gill, Krischaunda Gill (fiancée Jeff Jones), Kavon Terrell, Caleb Lowe, Jayden Boyd, Joann Boyd and Uzziah Hall. Great grandchildren; Ka’seyah Moore, Karter Hamilton and Kobe Jones; sisters-in-love Earnestine Boyd (Anthony, deceased), Amelia Stevenson (Dan), Julia Maxwell (Rob), Renee Boyd (Charles) and Kris James (Joseph); spiritual sisters Martha El, Linda El, Janice Lee, Sarah Weatherford and Carole Loatwall along with countless nieces, nephews and friends.
Joann finished her race on Sunday evening, June 19, 2022 at the age of 76. As our nation celebrates June 19th as a day of freedom from slavery; we can only imagine our mother in the arms of the Lord saying ‘Free at Last, Free at Last, Thank God Almighty I am Free at Last’
