Jean Steel Garland of Clarksville, Tennessee, departed this world for the next on August 10, 2016, comfortably at home. Mrs. Garland was born in Western Australia on April 6, 1923, the daughter of William Leonard Steel and Rose Elizabeth Loxton Steel. She graduated from Perth Modern School, earned a teaching degree at Mt. Lawley Teachers College, taught school in Western Australia, and was captain of the All-Australia Women's Field Hockey Team. She met her husband Robert while he was serving in the United States Navy during World War II. After marrying and moving to the United States, she was the host of a radio program, Mainly for Women, on WJBM in Jerseyville, IL, and was also the local reporter for the radio station. She taught elementary grades at Holy Ghost School in Jerseyville, and in later years obtained her radiological certification while working with her husband in his practice. She was a member of the Madison Street United Methodist Church in Clarksville. Survived by two daughters , Tracey Garland Vinson (Carey) and Darcy R. Garland (Nashaat Jobran); two granddaughters, Cassandra Vinson Erenrich (John) and Forrest Elizabeth Vinson; a sister in law, Edith Garland, and brother in law, Truman Hunter, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Melvin Garland, her son, Robert William Garland, her parents, a brother, Wilfred Steel and a sister, Norma (Pat) Steel of Western Australia. Mrs. Garland was a life-long reader and lover of books. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the local public library of your choice. A memorial service is planned at a later date in Jerseyville, IL.
